When we have processed your application, you will be notified whether you have been granted a permanent residence permit or application to stay outside Norway for a long period of time, or if your application has been rejected.

With a permanent residence permit or permanent right of residence, you can reside and work in Norway indefinitely. You will also be granted extra protection against expulsion.

While you wait for an answer to your application for Norwegian citizenship, it is important that you make sure that you have a valid residence permit, and that you notify us if your situation changes.

If you have been granted a refugee travel document, you must attend an appointment with the police. You cannot use the travel document to visit your home country.

There are shorter residence requirements for certain groups than those who apply under the main citizenship rule. In some cases, exemptions may also apply to other requirements.

UDI will prioritise applications for a residence permit for victims of abuse. But there are still some steps your case must go through before we can process it.
